![]() It’s hard to play that well, and if you have somebody just playing it for laughs, the show has very little meaning. ![]() That record has replaced any kind of functional relationship in reality. An amusing remark, to be sure, but it really is a story about the Man In The Chair and his relationship with a record. When he came and spoke to our Villanova audience Bob Martin said that he considered the show a tragic monologue interspersed with some funny numbers. There is a tricky monologue at the end that pivots from tragicomedy to tragedy to comedy on a dime, and not everyone can pull it off. The important thing is that he can command the stage for the whole show he makes or breaks the evening. He has to be able to sing, but only enough to just carry a tune at the end. This is a tour-de-force role for a comic actor. The actors are also playing actors playing characters, so there is a layering of delivery that’s fun, but challenging. There is a kind of honesty in this very ‘fake’ acting, but it takes a while to find it. Stock Gestures, which are normally to be frowned upon in modern Theatre, are actually just right here, because they make the stereotypes very specific. These characters are big, comedic, and play for laughs. This kind of acting is the sort of arch performance style that plays the scene, but is really focused at selling the characterization to the audience. Normally you’re looking for the sort of honesty between characters that projects to an audience, but doesn’t particularly acknowledge them. This can actually be a tough thing for a trained actor. The characters in the show-within-the-show should ideally be able to act presentationally, as in the period. So if you did it at a High School, you’d have to beef up that chorus of servants and be very creative about where you put those extra actors. It does have an Into The Woods style casting problem, in that it’s a show with a large ensemble cast and virtually no chorus. The show is basically light, fairly clean with only a small number of potentially offensive moments (some of which could be ‘tweaked’ in a very conservative venue), and audiences love it. With the exception of Tottendale, who is supposed to be old, and perhaps Drowsy and Man In Chair, everyone else makes sense with younger performers. ![]() In many ways, this is a perfect show for young performers. Unfortunately, the Sidekick doesn't offer the option to use stereo Bluetooth headphones it doesn't support the A2DP protocol, nor does it allow image or music file transfers using Bluetooth - only vCards. Tunes play loud through the back panels mono speaker and come across pleasant enough through earphones (there's a stereo pair supplied, with a 2.5mm jack socket offering upgrading opportunities). Not the most elegant mobile music player interface we've seen, but effective. You can call up onscreen a Mini Player onscreen music controls panel, or use drop down menus or key combo shortcuts to operate it. Tracks are listed in various familiar MP3 player categories, and you can create playlists. You can add tracks to the memory card by dragging and dropping when connected with a supplied USB cable. The music player supports MP3, AAC and WMA formats. This boosts capacity for tunes as well as imaging, as the Sidekick Slide also checks in with a music player. Thankfully, T-Mobile is supplying the Sidekick Slide with a 512MB MicroSD memory card in-box (the phone will support cards up to 4GB). Similarly, other apps - such as calendar, contacts and email - have portions of the onboard memory pre-allocated. The Sidekick Slide's memory allocation is parsimonious here, with just 1.75MB reserved for images. Using the camera (and in the menus), you'll also notice that the Sidekick Slide tells you how much space for pics you have left. Not a great come-on for the target youth audience. The camera's imaging quality is fairly basic, so wouldn't be suitable for more than cursory snap-and-sending. This would be a let-down in anything but an entry-level phone nowadays, particularly as it lacks even basic video recording facilities. Like previous Sidekick models, there's an underwhelming air to some of the features, particularly the 1.3-megapixel camera. These submenus usually show shortcuts to options that require multi-key combinations. Additional short cut keys - for quick access to messaging and camera functions - are located on the top side of the device.Ĭhecking for additional options for functions usually requires users to search drop down menus for lists of can-dos. Operating the device involves using a combination of keys on the corners of the fascia, alongside a clever trackball on the right panel and a four-way navigation pad on the left. The icon-based graphics are certainly youth-orientated. The purple theme continues behind the keypad, while the back panel has a rubberized feel, making it a more grown-up looking device than its predecessors its now appears more PDA than teenager toy. Motorola has given the Sidekick more high street-cred by decking out the new device in a slick black casing, trimmed with purple edging. Some additional ALT characters are hard to spot with the colours used on the keys (blue on black), but for its size the pips aren't bad. The keypad is comfortably usable, even though keys are small. And it does the usual text and MMS messaging too. It does instant messaging too, with Yahoo! instant messaging pre-configured. It does push email, with users able to register automatically for a special Sidekick account and use their own online email accounts. The keypad is at the heart of the Sidekick's raison d'etre as a multi-tasking messenger. This contains a row of numeric keys that can be used for tapping out phone numbers, plus a phone pad shaped collection of numbers doubled up on character keys. This slides up revealing the 47-button keypad. Here, Motorola has trumped its Sidekick 3 predecessor with a more detailed 2.4-inch 320x240 pixels QVGA screen. ![]() Chief among these is a large display under which is hidden a Qwerty keypad. Capable of 0.5, 1, 7 or 15 Watts of output the Rocker 15 is an extremely portable combo that moves seamlessly from the home to. It was sitting idle but turned on and just went on me. The first amp made a crackling noise then a pop and the dirty channel died. I think that the key for that amp is the speaker and the attenuator. I tested everything with that amp, the 7w mode, the bedroom switch (1w and 0.5w). The clean tone is really good, the dirty channel is as good as the clean channel but with a 3 bands EQ if you want. The bundle GAK had was advertised at £669.99 and they dropped it to the £629, think the switch is £25ish, the cover was something similar too, so it was a good deal. Man, I must say that this little Rocker 15 was something. Think the amp was listing at £649 at the time. ![]() £685 was the best price I could get for the amp and footswitch for elsewhere. I looked back in my email and it was £629 I paid for the bundle. Yes it's amazingly loud, 0.5W was still plenty for a noisy 2 player jam but I'm going to see if I can get away with 1W for the headroom.Įarly days for me and I don't know enough about amps to give a meaningful comparison save to say it seems to do what it should. The power cable goes in vertically up through the opening in the back, which is a pain in the ass if you need to disconnect and reconnect it much, but mine sits in one place all the time so it's not an issue for me at all.Ĭan't think of much else at the moment, but I love what a staggering deal you got well done, I'm going to ask you to negotiate my next house move. Everything about it feels reassuringly strong and well made. It works great in the half watt mode too, but for the room I have and my standard of playing the 7 and 15 watt modes are too loud for me, but there will be decent headroom in the higher watt modes.īuild-wise, other than (what I think was a dodgy valve) mentioned above, it's rock solid and very noticeably better built than my Marshall DSL 5 (which was about £200 less to be fair). I use the 1 watt mode most of the time with volume around half and it's perfect for home use for me. Bass at 11 o clock, mids and treble at 1 o clock, gain just a hair past halfway. The EQ controls and the gain are very responsive but I can't quite get a Metallica sort of tone from the amp without dicking about with a pedal too, but I've not spent all that long trying to resolve this yet - I love just playing it where it seems to work best for me. My only niggle is it sounds very dark with the gain cranked up and I'm not sure how to dial that out (like I say though, I'm learning as much as anything else) so I find it quite hard to get a metal tone I like that's not overly dark. It works brilliantly with any of the pedals I have and is very versatile. I'm very much still learning more than playing, but it's a fantastic amp. Foo Fighters, bit of Metallica, Hendrix (of sorts) a bit of Peter Green type stuff, pretty varied really as I take lessons and it can cover quite a lot of stuff. Absolutely zero issues and they were brilliant to deal with. The original amp had some kind of issue after 3 or 4 weeks but they replaced it within 24hrs and took the old one away. ![]() It was on a package deal anyway but I asked them if they could do anything and the guy (who was fantastic start to finish) came back with a deal price and it was a much better deal than I'd seen anywhere else. ![]() I think I paid £550 and the amp was listed at £599. I'll go and see if I can find the price I paid, but I got the amp, official fitted Orange cover, footswitch and a cable to connect it including next day delivery for less than the list price of just the amp. I got a good deal on a package from GAK last October / November(ish). 12/8/2023 0 Comments Galveston daily news app![]() ![]() Storm Anniversary a Celebration of Survival Although it contends with a shortage of jobs and affordable housing, the city’s air of battered gentility attracts swarms of Houston visitors each weekend. What Galveston retained-and finally grew to value-was its 19th century nature, former Mayor Barbara Crews says. The island’s limited space soon seemed antiquated by the sprawl of mainland cities. The cotton trade began to dwindle oil was struck at Spindletop, near Houston, within a year of the hurricane. Within a decade, technology to build deep water ports had brought a rival port to Houston. It wasn’t just the hurricane that made it so, but the 20th century itself. But the city the survivors wrenched back was a very different place. The city also built a sea wall-a gargantuan task that took 60 years to reach its current length of more than 10 miles. By 1911, 500 city blocks had been lifted as much as 11 feet. With funds from local and federal governments and businesses, engineers began to raise the island’s buildings, filling in the space beneath with 16 million cubic yards of sand. Those who stayed behind began rebuilding within days. Thousands of survivors fled the city for good. They burned for two months straight, filling the air with nauseating fumes. But the bodies, fixed with weights and dropped at sea, swept back ashore, so vast funeral pyres were built on shore instead. Coerced at gunpoint, 50 men filled barges with corpses after each load, the workers were given dippers of whiskey. Under martial law, all able-bodied men were forced to work. “The bodies of human beings, infants, aged and carcasses of animals are strewn on every hand-The bay is alive with them.”īut if the storm was otherworldly in its horror, the aftermath was epic in another way. “Dead, dead, dead, dead everywhere,” the Daily Times Herald of Dallas wrote Sept. When the storm finally calmed at midnight, the island was afloat with corpses, moaning victims and shattered buildings. The dog sniffed each person, seemed to realize that Cline’s wife was gone, and plunged back in the water, apparently to find her. Hours later, according to Larson, the surviving relatives were floating on an unhinged door, when the family retriever saw them and swam aboard. But his pregnant wife was pulled under and drowned. Before it toppled, his two oldest girls leaped out with an uncle, and Cline and his youngest daughter followed shortly after. The rest were swept to shore and buried under tons of ocean-swept sand.Ĭonvinced the storm would ebb, Cline stayed with his family in their two-story house. Finally it swallowed them, drowning all except three boys who scrambled free and swam away. Mary’s Orphans Asylum, 10 nuns lashed themselves to 93 small children as the water seeped up to their second-story refuge. Residents hacked holes into their floors, hoping to stabilize their piered houses, but thousands of buildings filled slowly with seawater, then collapsed.Īt St. The monstrous waves drove houses near the water inland, smashing down the structures in their path. A tidal surge as high as 15.7 feet engulfed the city. But then a Florida storm defied Cline’s predictions, turning toward Galveston, and the wafer-flat city was swamped beneath the bay and the Gulf of Mexico.īy 7:30 p.m., winds topped 120 miles an hour. At the cusp of a new century, the opinions of the dandyish, mustachioed young Cline held the weight of solid fact, writes author Eric Larson in his 1999 bestseller, “Isaac’s Storm.” Although without modern tools such as radar, Cline was a distinguished meteorologist, embodying the era’s belief that science could master the elements. ![]() |
